Britain to Increase Funding for BBC World Service

Britain said on Thursday it would increase funding for the British Broadcasting Corporation's (BBC) World Service over the next three years, citing the growing need to provide the global public with neutral news amid conflicts and media blackouts worldwide. The UK's Foreign Office had fully funded the BBC World Service before rules were changed in 2014 to make the station bear most of the cost. A panel of lawmakers warned last week that the ambiguity surrounding the funding was concerning. The previous funding agreement was due to end at the end of March. The UK Foreign Office has pledged 11 million pounds ($14 million) to cover costs until the end of the financial year.
